EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
