Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
